Be a Better Blogger: Organizing Tips for Beginner Bloggers

July 19th, 2011 | Posted by: Traci Bisson | 0 Comments

Everyone is blogging nowadays. Whatever you blog is about, it’s important for your blog to be organized.

  • An organized blog is an easy to read blog.
  • An organized blog is a place readers want to come back to.
  • An organized blog represents YOU. You don’t want to look disorganized!

Whether you’re starting or tweaking a blog, here are a few tips that will keep you on track:

Schedule it. Blocking out time on your calendar gets you one step closer to accomplishing the task. Figure out how many times a week you can realistically post and stick to that schedule.

Sort it out. Compile a list of topics you want to discuss on your blog and determine when to write about them. For instance, a Professional Organizer might blog about spring cleaning in April. An accountant might blog about tax season in January.

Break it down into small chunks. Take those topics and create subtopics for them. So, if the accountant were to blog about tax season in January, and she schedules one blogging appointment a week, she may blog about 1099’s the first week, dividend statements the second, Roth IRAs the third, and helpful filing tips the fourth week.

Delegate. Sometimes we need a break from blogging. Find blogs of similar interest and link to their information. Check out pertinent blogs and invite their authors to guest blog on your site. You get a break from writing while your guest blogger gets a whole new set of readers/followers of their blog.

Get rid of the clutter. You must grab the reader’s attention within the first three seconds of their arrival at your blog. If they spend those three seconds sloshing through pictures, videos and advertisements to find your latest blog post, they may not return out of frustration. Keep the look of your blog simple and streamlined.

Maintain it. Stay on track with posting to your blog. Going on vacation or through a life-changing event? Write posts in advance or have a guest blogger fill in for you. Keep all photos and videos for your blog in one folder. Once a month, review your topics and subtopics and make necessary changes.

After applying the above principles, your newly organized blog will be low maintenance, a pleasure to post to, and a joy to read.

Happy Blogging!

Caring for YOURSELF – The Most UNselfish Thing a Mom Can Do

July 13th, 2011 | Posted by: Traci Bisson | 0 Comments

Airlines instruct parents to put oxygen masks on themselves before their babies because a parent must be alive to help care for their dependent. Why has the rest of society not adopted this practice in everyday life?

Must we be in an emergency situation to remember that as parents, we are the baby’s lifeline and that taking care of ourselves first is actually the most UNselfish thing to do? Being healthy, happy, well rested and balanced will ensure you can give your family your all. Therefore, we must remember to make time to care for ourselves so that we have the energy to happily care for our household and cope with the stresses of daily life.

We are very important, and we can’t forget that.

Babies depend on us for everything – love, food, shelter, protection, guidance and endless entertainment for their ever inquisitive minds. As moms, we gladly give all of this to our family, striving to be the perfect mom, wife, daughter, in-law, friend and co-worker. But we can’t run around acting as if we have an infinite supply of energy, always putting the needs of everyone else first. Like the oxygen in an airplane, our energy can run out and a tired, unhealthy, cranky and overwhelmed mom doesn’t do her family much good.

That is why we must take time to refuel our spiritual vehicles and recharge our bodies so that we can carry everyone else around with us.

Remember that our health is essential to the family’s wellbeing. Can you make it a goal to incorporate activities that nourish your body and soul into your everyday life? Or, at least take the time out to do one good thing for yourself every week?

Perhaps you can decide to nap when the baby does, make time to exercise each morning or go to bed earlier. Or, you can set aside 15 to 30 minutes a day to relax. Maybe you want to set a goal to eat more nutrient dense food or take up a hobby/class once a week. Whatever your goal is, commit to it and let your family know you need this to be a better you. A happy and fit mommy is a great example for a baby, and taking time to care for yourself will make for a happier YOU.

Nourishing a Healthy Family Involves More than Just Food

March 24th, 2011 | Posted by: Traci Bisson | 0 Comments

Kathleen Cuneo, PhD, understands that nourishing a healthy family involves more than just food.  The psychologist and busy mom of three daughters recently launched a new service for parents seeking support and education about raising a healthy family.

KitchenTableParents.com offers a manageable “recipe” for peaceful, meaningful family connections, including parenting strategies for raising happy, compassionate kids.

“I wanted to apply my knowledge as a psychologist and a mom to help families who were struggling to get family meals together.  As a psychologist, I know that family meals are valuable for children’s development, but as a mom, I constantly see families struggle to make this a reality,” Dr. Cuneo explained.

“I offer strategies to help with picky eaters and other obstacles to family meals.  But I also don’t want people to focus so much on the meal that they lose sight of other important parenting and family issues,” she continued.

Dr. Cuneo surveyed other parents to determine topics of interest, and found that people were searching for written and audio materials, and other resources to help them raise children who are healthy eaters, cooperative siblings, and happy, caring kids.

Her new endeavor focuses on meals as a context for families to come together and promote positive family interactions.

Dr. Cuneo is excited about the new site, which will give parents support and education in addition to recipes and meal plans.  Her goal is to provide parents with valuable information that they want, helping them feel more confident and self-assured in their parenting.

“My top piece of parenting advice is to make family dinners a priority.  This is just as important as all of the other activities kids are involved in,” Dr. Cuneo explained.  “It doesn’t necessarily have to be dinner, though.  You can be flexible about when you spend quality time together, but make this family time a priority.”

Dr. Cuneo, who is based in Nanuet, NY, said that her three daughters are involved with many activities, so sometimes, it’s just not possible to all eat dinner as a family.  But she does have dinner with whichever children are home each night, and makes sure to prioritize family time on a regular basis.

In addition to family mealtimes, Dr. Cuneo’s family bonds over seeing plays together, supporting her daughters in their performances and sports, and watching the TV show Glee as a family.

SPECIAL OFFER: Dr. Cuneo will be offering five, free 30-minute private phone consultations this month for parents to discuss their most burning parenting questions and/or feeding challenges. Five Premium Members will be randomly selected from all registered Premium Members for this offer on April 18, 2011. For more information, visit www.kitchentableparents.com/information.

Mom entrepreneurs – do you need to be held accountable for your goals?

March 15th, 2011 | Posted by: Traci Bisson | 0 Comments

I think we all need to be held accountable for our goals whether they are personal or professional – here are a few of mine:

  1. I want to lose 10 pounds and eat healthier.
  2. I want to grow The Mom Entrepreneur to the next level.
  3. I want to improve my online media presence.
  4. I want to better manage the cash that flows in and out of my house and business.

Do any of these resonate with you? If yes, then you truly are a mom entrepreneur who is trying to balance it all.

We get so busy with the everyday details of our lives that we overlook what we all need as moms and business professionals.

What if you could participate in expert-led, private discussion groups (mini masterminds) with other mom entrepreneurs about the things that are most important to you – stress free weight loss, growing your business, understanding how social media can generate business for you, and learning how to manage your cash flow and save for the things you want – like a family vacation? What if the monthly cost was EXTREMELY affordable?

Would you do it?

Of course you would!

I am excited to announce the launch of our *NEW* Accountability Discussion Groups. Thanks to member feedback, we are launching four groups under a pilot test program.

Each Group Leader will offer a moderated and thoughtful discussion about their topic. They will offer tips, ideas, advice and resources for maximizing the learning process. When you join an Accountability Discussion Group, you will be responsible for completing the goals outlined by each Group Leader.

Group Leaders may feature guest experts, offer podcasts, Webinars, videos, handouts, downloadable documents and other tools to enhance the learning process as needed.

Membership in the Accountability Discussion Groups is revolving and new members may join at anytime, and still experience the full benefits of learning.

Ramblings of a mom entrepreneur up after midnight

March 11th, 2011 | Posted by: Traci Bisson | 0 Comments

It is 1:44 am and I am up!

How often does this happen to you? You have had a very busy day…a very busy week…and your head has been spinning. You have tried diligently to create lists of all the tasks you need to complete by the end of the week, but there is just too much going on. The best time to process your day is between the hours of 1:00 am – 4:00 am right? Shouldn’t you be sleeping?

The head of an entrepreneur is constantly filled with ideas, new concepts, tasks to complete, and things you may have forgotten that need to be written down.

When this happens to me, I need to get up, hop on the computer, and empty whatever is inside my head.

Of course you should be careful sending emails during these late hours. You are not totally coherent so who knows what you might say when under the influence of the sandman. Then you have to explain why you were up at such a late hour working because those you email always want to know.

It is now 2:01 am; my stomach is grumbling, and I must resist the urge to eat. I don’t want to develop another bad habit.

My son’s celebrating his 11th birthday this weekend with 13 other pre-teen boys. Yes, at our home. I know, what was I thinking? I thought I would save money and have his friends over for a party at our house. How do you entertain 14 boys for 3 hours? Suggestions? I think it might rain.

On Monday, there was the last minute request for brownies that were needed for a fiesta in Spanish class.

Tuesday the kids were off from school because of voting and teacher workshops. Not much work completed that day. We did enjoy a trip to the library where I learned my son needed a reference book about an historical figure for a project due on Wednesday. And wouldn’t you know, James Armistead Lafayette was not listed in their encyclopedias.

Wednesday and Thursday was full of meetings, phone conferences and a teleseminar.

Today is Friday and I will most likely be exhausted all day. Phone calls, an eye exam and shopping for party favors and food will fill up most of today.

What a great week – I would not change a thing! The life of a mom entrepreneur is filled with so many riches. I love working out of my home. My dog is with me all day – my kids get off the bus in the afternoon, and I get to hear about their day – I am very fortunate.

Tell me about your week. Do you feel fortunate to be a mom entrepreneur?
